EPEX SPOT welcomes Greenlink Interconnector between Ireland and UK

Following successful Commercial go-live for delivery date 30/01

Dublin, London, 10.2.2025 –Following earlier announcement on the JAO message board 29th of January 2025, EPEX SPOT is pleased to announce the successful operational and commercial delivery of the Greenlink interconnector for delivery date 30th January 2025.

Greenlink Interconnector is a new 500 MW subsea interconnector linking the electricity grids in Ireland (IE) and Great Britain (GB), contributing to a more integrated and resilient energy market between the Irish Single Electricity Market (SEM) and Great Britain, offered in both flow directions. Greenlink has been recognized as a Project of Common Interest (PCI) and is of strategic importance, as it provides increased energy security, value to energy consumers, further integration of renewable energy sources and regional investments.

“We are delighted/excited to see the Greenlink Interconnector go live with the successful offer of capacity in the intraday auctions,” said Colin D’Arcy, Commercial Director, Greenlink Interconnector. “We welcome the go-live of the Greenlink Interconnector between Ireland and the UK. Our many initiatives across the European continent have demonstrated that the efficient allocation of cross-border capacity via market coupling is very beneficial for the dynamics of the market. We are pleased that market participants in Ireland and the UK will benefit from this new interconnectorcommented Howard Wright, Head of Public & Regulatory Affairs UK of EPEX SPOT.

Greenlink is the latest interconnection project designed to enhance energy security, reliability, and sustainability within in the region. Following interconnectors Moyle (in commercial operation since 2002, offering 500MW) and EWIC (in commercial operation since 2012, offering 500MW) with the addition of Greenlink the available interconnection capacity totals 1500MW on the SEM-GB border. Capacities are offered in two intraday auctions (SEM-GB IDA1 and IDA2). More information is found here.

Power exchanges will provide market participants with access to both the Irish and UK electricity markets, ensuring transparent and competitive pricing, with EPEX SPOT and Nord Pool being active on GB side of the border and SEMOpx on IE side.

As Greenlink becomes operational, market participants can take advantage of new trading opportunities and improved flexibility in managing electricity generation and consumption across the two interconnected markets in the SEM-GB region.
