Celebrating 25 Years of the Dutch Power Spot Market

EPEX SPOT thanks trading community in the Netherlands for their support and trust

Amsterdam / Paris, 27 May 2024. EPEX SPOT is celebrating a significant milestone with the 25 years anniversary of the Dutch power spot market. The first trade occurred on 25 May 1999. In April 2015, the operator of the Dutch power spot market Amsterdam Power Exchange joined forces with EPEX SPOT - a strategic move to consolidate spot power trading across Europe, enhancing liquidity, efficiency, and market integration. Over the years, the Dutch power spot market has grown considerably with an annual traded volume of 3 TWh in 2000 to nearly 50 TWh in 2023. Over 100 members traded in our Dutch market segments at the end of 2023.

Over the past 25 years, the implementation of Day-Ahead and Intraday markets in the Netherlands has witnessed these key milestones: In 2006, the Trilateral Market Coupling was launched, encompassing Belgium, France, and the Netherlands. Price Coupling on the Day-Ahead market was introduced in February 2014; and in June 2018, the Dutch power market was part of the 14 EU countries to first launch the pan-European Intraday Coupling SIDC (also referred to as XBID). These coupling initiatives provided greater flexibility and precision in matching supply and demand. Today, Dutch power spot market participants have access to the complete suite of products and services to optimise their trading strategies, from Day-Ahead to Intraday markets, including the After-market, the EPEX spot auction for Guarantees of Origin and Localflex solution, designed for Local Flexibility markets.

The latter was introduced in the Netherlands in June 2023, when EPEX SPOT established the connection between EPEX Localflex and the GOPACS platform, which represented another step in the advancement of flexibility procurement. The successful go-live was a result of a close cooperation between both parties which allowed to leverage synergies and expertise.

EPEX SPOT, in light of the energy transition and the latest evolution of the regulatory framework, will continue to drive innovation, foster market integration, and support the transition to a net-zero economy. This happens in close cooperation with our Dutch market participants, whom we would like to expressly thank for their trust and support over the past 25 years. The lessons learned and experience gained are very valuable in navigating the complexities of the future energy landscape.
