EPEX SPOT's contribution to the public consultation on the French energy-climate strategy

Paris, 22 December 2023. EPEX SPOT organizes the electricity spot markets for Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Sweden, Switzerland and the United Kingdom. Since 2016, EPEX SPOT organises the secondary market for capacity guarantees in France. Recently we began offering local flexibility markets and guarantees of origin auctions to promote the integration of renewable energies and encourage the active participation of consumers and producers in the electricity market.

Our response to the public consultation on the future French Energy-Climate Strategy (SFEC) aims to highlight the importance of all these markets and price signals in the decarbonization process. More specifically, our contribution is based on the following three observations:

1) Congestion management is one of the major concerns of tomorrow's power system;
2) The ultimate goal of the energy transition should be the full integration of renewable energies into the market;
3) Effective management of the transition is intrinsically linked to the importance of carbon pricing.
